Math Art: Spirolaterals
Using this resource, students will engage in analyzing and creating spirolateral patterns using random numbers and multiplication patterns. Creating spirolaterals provides students opportunities to use mathematical thinking and reasoning. What is a Spirolateral?
Spirolaterals are spirals constructed of straight lines of varying length. A “square spiral” is a structured design based on a repeated sequence of commands using lengths and rotations. A simple spirolateral is created by drawing a set of lines; the first at a unit length, then each additional line increasing by one-unit length while turning a constant direction.
