Math Art: Spirolaterals

$5.00

Using this resource, students will engage in analyzing and creating spirolateral patterns using random numbers and multiplication patterns. Creating spirolaterals provides students opportunities to use mathematical thinking and reasoning. Students must use critical thinking and a variety of problem-solving strategies create this math art.

What is a Spirolateral?

Spirolaterals are spirals constructed of straight lines of varying length. A “square spiral” is a structured design based on a repeated sequence of commands using lengths and rotations. A simple spirolateral is created by drawing a set of lines; the first at a unit length, then each additional line increasing by one-unit length while turning a constant direction.

Implementation:

This activity is a great supplement to your multiplication unit. This unit was made with advanced learners in mind. The students will explore the patterns of multiplication and create beautiful art. The following teaching sequence is just a suggestion. You may use the activities in the way that best fits your students needs. The practice pages have a dot which indicates a starting position. The dots were strategically placed so that the spirolateral will be completed on the page.
