














The Lion and the Mouse (Big Idea)
This resource is designed to help you introduce one of Sandra Kaplan's icons of Depth and Complexity (Big Idea) using an Aesop's fable. It includes background information for the teacher, the fable, along with a lesson to introduce the icon. Each fable focuses on a single icon to allow students to grapple with the content. Included in this resource are accompanying Logic Puzzles which further critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills. A STEM activity is also included with each fable to further develop the students’ critical and creative thinking.
Differentiated Reading Levels: Each fable is available at three reading levels, approximately 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, along with tailored student response sheets: The levels are referenced using a dot system in the upper right corner.
Level 1: Focuses on the main aspect of the referenced depth and complexity icon.
Level 2: Includes the main aspect while prompting students to analyze more nuanced elements of the icon.
Level 3: Features a variety of depth and complexity icons and questions for deeper analysis.
